I offer presentations on data literacy, data physicalization, and best practices with assessment, grading, and feedback. I also facilitiate district or community conversations for school improvement or other data collection purposes.

Sample Projects
Use Data to Tell Your Story
This presentation has been adapted for a variety of audiences and has been included with both state and national educational conferences. It was most recently presented at the 2025 annual Washington Educational Research Association conference. The presentation and associated resources may be viewed on the companion GitHub site.
The content has also been presented as a 3-hour workshop where participants identified a unique question of interest and develop a plan to collect and represent data in a physical form. Along the way, participants improve their data literacy skills to better communicate the story. It has also been adapted into a five session mini-course at the university level to build understanding for teachers in training.
I have also presented on the topics of human-centered design and inquiry cycles using data. There are many tools and strategies available to share and use with your audience, regardless of the size of the group, time available, or background.
On the Bubble
Who are we talking about when we label students as bubble kids? Behind every data point is a human being. who should be seen and viewed within a context. In this project, three years of achievement data was analyzed to look at growth and consistency of performance by a single cohort of students. Each student’s data was modeled into a large tack and attached to a cork board.
Disk diameter
One-inch disks represent students who had changes in their scores within one standard deviation from the mean between 2015 and 2017 on the Smarter Balanced ELA summative assessment. Changes in student performance that were more than one standard deviation, but less than three, are represented by two-inch disks. Finally, students who made between two and three standard deviations in performance are represented by three-inch disks.
Color
Each disk has been painted to represent the performance level in 2017.
Orange = Well below standard; positive growth
Yellow = Below standard; positive growth
Light Green = At standard; positive growth
Dark Green = Above standard; positive growth
Black = Negative change in student performance
Number of disks
Students may grow along the scale of performance each year, but it may or may not be enough to move to a different performance level. The number of disks in a stack shows how many years a student has been at that level. More disks means more years have been spent at that status.
